Where the Wild Things Are is an adventure playground, for younger kids, located in Central Park, Boulder, Colorado. It is a natural play space with three wooden treehouses that encourage active play and physical discovery, and provide a sensory and tactile experience with natural elements. There are two wooden ladders on two of the trees and a rope ladder on the third tree in order for the kids to get inside the adventure treehouses. Once in the treehouses kids can zipline to the other treehouse, walk across a wooden bridge, paint on the walls, and many other obstacles that allow for non-prescriptive and imaginative play. The tire swing on one of the trees is a space designed for quiet under the shade.
This design was inspired by the movie Where the Wild Things Are, and the pure imagination of kids. It is a space that lets kids create a world of their own that is unlike the usual playground. The design invites kids to interact with nature and be able to have unrestricted play in a safe manner.
